What makes a successful candidate
If you want to make the most of the exciting London job market, which is currently thriving, then you need to know how to make the most of your skills and experience to land that perfect job! On top of relevant experience, a well laid out CV with pertinent information and no grammatical errors(!), there are a few other tips and hints that might give you the edge over other applicants. Read on:
- Preparedness is key:
Before going to any interview, ensure you’ve researched the company and the role, and are confident you are well informed on the type of work you’re likely to be dealing with. Information about the company’s history is also well regarded.
- First Impressions Last…
…So make sure you are on time to your interview! Arrive 5 – 10 minutes early (too early can leave a bad impression too!). If you have time constraints (ie, you’re interviewing during your lunch break), it is a good idea to have made the firm aware of this earlier, through the agency or, if applying direct, yourself. Ideally though, try not to put yourself in a position where you’ll be feeling rushed and looking at the clock.
- Practice!
Most firms will require you to do some testing in first or second interview stage. Try to find out what the testing will involve and whatever you do, practice before your interview! Even if this means sitting at home transcribing the evening news just to get your audio speeds up a little bit, it will be worth the effort!
- Be Confident and sell yourself
Sell the unique strengths you have gained, special skills you’ve picked up in various roles and particular projects you’ve been involved with that might give you an edge. It’s a common interview mistake to talk yourself down and downplay your skills, because it seems immodest to be overly confident. Don’t fall into this trap! Employers want to know that whatever is thrown at you, even if you haven’t covered it before, you will have a ‘can do’ attitude.
- Don’t ask silly questions!
When asked, ‘Do you have any questions for me?’ please note that the type of things to enquire about do not include “How many sick days do I get a year?” or “Can I take holidays during my probationary period?”. While it is understandable that you would want all the facts before considering a job offer, these are things that your recruitment agent will tell you, or, if you’re looking independently, will be spelled out for you in your employment contract. - Dress to Impress
Try to create a fantastic impression from the minute you enter the building by dressing to impress. For most corporate offices, this will involve a conservative suit, neat and polished shoes, neat hair, makeup (if applicable) and nails. Be confident and feel comfortable.
